TODAY AND TIME

TODAY is here. I will start with a smile and resolve to be agreeable. I will not criticize. I refuse to waste my valuable time.

TODAY is one thing I know I am equal with all others - Time. All of us draw the same salary in seconds, minutes and hours.

TODAY I will not waste my time because the minutes I wasted yesterday are as lost as a vanished thought.

TODAY I refuse to spend time worrying about what might happen . . . it usually doesn't. I am going to spend time making things happen.

TODAY I am determined to study to improve myself, for tomorrow, I may be wanted and I must not be found lacking.

TODAY I am determined to do the things that I should do. I firmly determine to stop doing the things I should not do.

TODAY I begin by doing and not wasting my time. In one week I will be miles beyond the person I am Today.

TODAY I will not imagine what I would do if things were different. They are not different. I will make success with what material I have.

TODAY I will stop saying "If I had time" - I know I never will "find time" for anything. If I want time I must make it.

TODAY I will act toward other people as though this might be my last day on earth. I will not wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes.

Men Regular Prostate Exams are Important

Prostate Cancer Effects 1 out of every 6 American Males Each Year

Worried about Your Prostate Health?

For several months many of my readers have asked me to write an article on a subject most men don’t want to talk or hear about. It is regular prostate exams. This exam is very important and men you should be having physicals which include this type of exam.

Prostate cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer in men over the age of 50 and in African-American Males over the age of 45 in the United States excluding the skin cancers. As males age the prostate can develop problems.

Many men with symptoms are affected so mildly that they don’t need treatment. Still you may want to consult your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms; weak or interrupted urine flow, difficulty starting urine flow, (especially in the morning) or blood in the urine. BPH is not related to prostate cancer which is the growth of abnormal rather then normal cells. The two conditions do however, share some symptoms. Be sure to get regular physical examinations so that you and your doctor can detect any signs of trouble early.

The prostate goes through two periods of growth throughout a man’s life. The first occurs during the beginning stages of puberty when it doubles in size. Its growth then stops until about the age of 25. At this time, it slowly begins to grow again and for some men this can become a problem once they reach their early 50s. That is why it is strongly recommended that all men over the age of 50 go for regular prostate exams and have a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test.

There are 3 major diseases associated with the prostate they are; benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate, prostatitis, and prostate cancer. It is important that you understand the symptoms and warning signs of prostate disease and tell your doctor about any that you may experience. Even in the absence of urinary symptoms, in order to promote a healthy prostate your doctor may perform periodic prostate exams and regularly monitor your prostate specific antigen (PSA) level.

Usually there are no specific signs or symptoms of early stage prostate cancer. This is why the need to get screened for this disease is extremely important. Yearly exams done by your doctor which include a DRE and PSA blood test are very important. By the time some of the symptoms or signs are noticeable the disease might be in a later stage. Catching prostate cancer at the earliest possible time is the best way to ensure that treatment will work.

Most of the symptoms below can be caused by prostate cancer or by many other conditions either affecting the prostate or other anatomy in the same region. Be sure to consult with you doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms as soon as possible. Do not hesitate and don’t panic, remember when we get older the prostate often enlarge, a condition which is called benign prostatic hyperplasia. BPH is often more times than none not a life threatening condition and often causes the same symptoms as prostate cancer.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer and other conditions:

1. A urgent need to urinate, frequency of urination increases, especially during the night

2. Difficulty initiating urination or holding back urination

3. A weak or interrupted flow of urine

4. Pain or burning upon urination

5. Difficulty in initiating an erection or keeping an erection, painful ejaculation

6. Blood in the urine or semen

7. Pain in the lower back, hips or upper thighs

No other human organ is as susceptible to cancer as the prostate. Each year, an estimated 209,900 American men are diagnosed with the disease, making it the most prevalent form of cancer in the United States. Although lung cancer claims more than twice as many men’s lives each year, prostate cancer is the second most lethal male cancer, killing 41,800 men annually.

The vast majority of men who have the disease will never know it. That is because prostate cancer normally manifests a gradual growth of tumor, often taking 20 to 30 years to become large enough to be detected by any currently available tests or to bring about serious health problems. By then, many older men who had these small tumors will have long since died of other origins such as heart disease and stroke.

Doctors suspect that dietary changes may help men to stall the progress of this disease and prevent it from becoming life threatening. As the old adage goes, you are what you eat. So eat healthy in order to be healthy. Guys take care of you, get a check up and try to stay healthy.

Until next month with more, Moments with Mary.

Vinegar

When was the last time you took a moment to think about the power of vinegar? When was the last time you marveled at its healing properties, its cleaning properties and about it’s many other uses?

The name vinegar comes from the French ‘vinaigre’ which means sour wine. Vinegar was first discovered over 10,000 years ago. The shelf life of vinegar is almost indefinite. Because of its acid nature, vinegar is self-preserving and does not need refrigeration. White vinegar will remain virtually unchanged over an extended period of time. Vinegar is best stores in an airtight container in a cool dark place. Did you know that vinegar holds a rich place in our history and is mentioned throughout the Bible? Research worldwide supports and commends what Hippocrates (the father of medicine) found and treated his patients with in 400 B.C. He discovered that natural undistilled Apple Cider Vinegar (or AVC*) is a powerful cleansing and healing elixir “a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria” for a healthier, stronger, longer life! It is said that apple cider vinegar is probably one of the best (and cheapest) detoxifier for the body. Vinegar can be helpful in balancing your pH. Your body’s pH is dictated by diet, breathing, water intake, stress, and exercise.

Going through some of my Mother’s things after she passed away I found some information she had written down many years ago. She wrote, all I need to know and remember about vinegar. Mom used most of these ideas on our family and I have practiced the same with my own family. Here are just a few of her tips

Whiter, brighter, laundry; add a cup of vinegar to the last rinse water.

Crayon stains; moisten a soft toothbrush with vinegar and rub out crayon from fabric and other surfaces.

Congestion relief; inhale the steam from boiled vinegar; be careful not to burn yourself.

Sharpen knives better; dampen the whetstone with a little vinegar.

Keep new skillets from sticking; first boil some vinegar in the pan.

Boiled ham; improve the flavor of boiled ham add vinegar to the cooking water.

Firmer jell-o gelatin in warm weather; add a teaspoon of vinegar.

Keep cheese soft and mold free; wrap it in a cloth saturated with vinegar; then storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Steamed vegetables; keep bright color and vitamin content add 2 teaspoons of vinegar to the water when steaming. (This also prevents off-orders)

Water spots; ¼ c. of vinegar added to rise water will keep glasses from water spotting. It also kills germs.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar: One of Mother Nature’s Most Perfect Foods.  See you next month, with more Moments with Mary.
