Little Things

A little deed, a little smile a bright “Hello” makes life worthwhile,

A little word of earnest prayer may drive away grief and despair.

A little praise, a kindly act may keep a breaking heart intact.

The Birdseed Boobie

Several years after my radical mastectomy I found myself always looking for some type of lighter weight material to make me a new breast form. Even though I had an almost new breast form the weight of it was too heavy and by the end of the day, just tired me out. I knew I could make me something lighter if I just put my mind to it. Finally I had an idea, I knew it would work. So off to the store I went to buy just what I needed. Birdseed is light and I can wear it for five months then throw it out to the birds. Gee, I thought this could be a win win situation. Now, off to my sewing room I went to design a light weight breast form. I purchased two boxes of parakeet seed, since it was extra clean and a five pound bag of regular birdseed.

It took both boxes of the parakeet seed and 3 pounds of the regular birdseed to make just my size. I worked to make a shape that was just right for me. Then it was time to try the new breast form on. It was much lighter and I felt very sure that this invention was one of my brightest ideas yet.

I do lots of sewing and what a pin cushion I found I could stick my straight pins in my homemade breast form and not stop the sewing machine for I had everything at my finger tips. I also found that the birdseed keep my needles and straight pins very sharp. Oh what a treat, light weight, pin sharpener and recyclable I had something I could wear comfortably at work and didn't have to worry about cutting or puncturing it at the sewing factory where I worked, plus if anyone needed their dull sewing needles sharpened I could do it for them free.

I felt very good about wearing my new breast form to work, and in time the gals that worked for me loved my breast form as much as I did. I remember one day several of the girls had given me a flower corsage there were extra hat pins and I took the large hat pins and stuck them into the breast form for safe keeping and forgot that they were there. That same day I had a new employee come to work for me, he was a young man and had never worked around a large group of women. He was a little nervous about that, but I told him to just do his job and try to blend in and he would enjoy working with all of us.

Finally about four hours later the young man said, “Could I please ask you a question? I said, "Sure what is it." "Do you know you have some large hat pins sticking in your chest?" "Yes, I do I put them there for safe keeping." He then asked, "Doesn't that hurt?" I smiled and said, "No I don't feel a thing," and then went on with my work. That day several of the gals come up to me to get their sewing needles sharpened I guess the young man watched, but never said another word. Finally at the end of the day when he was about to go home he said," You are a real tough lady; my wife is a big baby she can't even take a shot from the doctor." I told him to have a good evening and I would see him tomorrow. I never told the young man any different and he never gave me one ounce of trouble. The birdseed boobie worked out very well for me and my workers throughout the years, but there were a few small things I had to remember, and if you decide to make a birdseed breast form for yourself here are a few tips.

  • Don't get it wet, keep it dry.
  • Don't hug someone too hard or long for the birdseed is not that soft.
  • Birds can smell their food, so when wearing the birdseed form be careful.
  • Don't go out in public with pins and needles sticking out of you like a porcupine.
  • Don't wear the real silicone breast form and forget and stick a pin in it by mistake.
  • In time the birdseed collects moisture and clumps together, so change it out after 5 months.
  • When or if you make a birdseed boobie use more parakeet seed than regular birdseed it is cleaner.
  • If you choose to wear your birdseed breast form outside, birds smell the seeds and could flock you.

I wore the birdseed breast form for years and then finally retired that design and the seeds with a newer material that was even lighter and worked as well if not better. During the time I wore my birdseed breast form I wrote a song about it and shared it with many of the ladies who like me were trying to make something lighter and better to wear. However, there were never any guarantees or warranties with these breast forms and the up keep was cheap but the long term wear was still not like having the real thing. So before long, I like so many others decided to leave the birdseed to the birds.

Working for God on earth doesn't pay much, but His retirement plan is out of this world!

Isn’t It Funny That . . .

When other people take to long to do something, they’re slow . . .

But when I take a long time to do something, I’m through.

When other people don’t do it, they’re too lazy . . .

But when I don’t do it, I’m too busy.

When other people go ahead and do something without being told, they’re overstepping their bounds . . .

But when I go ahead and do something without being told, that’s initiative.

When other people state their side of the question strongly, they’re bullheaded . . .

But when I state my side of a question strongly, I’m being firm.

When other people overlook a few rules of etiquette, they’re rude . . .

But when I skip a few of the rules, I’m original.

When other people do something that pleases the boss, they’re polishing the brass . . .

But when I do something that pleases the boss, that’s cooperation.

When other people get ahead, they sure had lucky breaks . . .

But when I manage to get ahead, Man! Hard work did that!

Funny, isn’t it . . . Or is it???

How to Make your Life Easier

Clean pewter objects with cabbage leaves to get them clean. The leaves are gentle enough to clean the pewter without scratching it.

To remove discoloration from an aluminum pot cook applesauce in it. The acid will brighten up the metal.

Make your kitchen smell good and eliminate odors after cleaning your oven. Place a few orange peels in a shallow dish with water; bake at 350 degrees until the fresh orange smell fills your kitchen.

You can make your swim suits fade proof by soaking it in equal parts of vinegar and water before washing.

Water you hanging plants without taking them down or making a mess with water. I use a turkey baster.

In the summer I mix a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice with a quart of water and pour into a spray bottle. Bugs hate the lemony smell.

Stop a run in your stockings with a swipe of glue stick. It works as well as nail polish and a lot less mess.

Did you know if you keep your bath soap unwrapped and stored in the linen closet. Not only will it scent your linen, but exposed to air, the soap will harden and last longer in the bath.

Adding a few dried chilies to dried beans, peas and lentils before sealing them into airtight jars helps to protect them from insects.

Run resistant nylons try this easy trick for longer – lasting pantyhose: spray the heels and the toes with hair spray. The spray helps strengthen the fibers.

A bit of good information for you.

If you get stung by either a bee and hornet

Do this it works - put a penny

on the bite for 15 minutes.

The next morning, there will be was no sign of a bite.

The penny takes the string out of the bite immediately.

 No redness, no swelling.

Just wanted to share this marvelous information.

Somehow the copper in the penny

counteracts the bite.

Give Yourself Happiness

Experts say that your capacity for happiness is only as great as your ability to give and express love. So give the gift of your time, the gift of privacy, the gift of listening, the gift of fun, and the gift of letting others give to you.

Give yourself freedom to grow and change. Love yourself enough to quit procrastinating: quit anything that holds you back. You deserve the freedom to try and the freedom to fail. Offer yourself freedom to grow even and especially when you fail.

I believe that you must “Give for the joy of giving, because if you only give to get something back then really you are not giving at all, you are only trading.”

Many times we may find things in our life that are difficult for us to do. Here are a few suggestions that may help you.

Be Charitable Control your temper

Don’t be selfish Think before you act

Try taking advice Admit making errors

Forgive and forget Profit by your mistakes

Apologize when you’re wrong, Be considerate to others

Do you have dry skin?

Dry skin is most common in your lower legs, arms, flanks (sides of the abdomen), and thighs. It can be a temporary problem, or one you experience only in winter, on the other hand it could be a life long concern. Although skin is often driest on your arms, lower legs and the sides of your abdomen, this pattern can vary considerably from person to person. We can’t forget that dry skin can also depend on your age, your health status, your locale, the amount of time you spend outdoors, and the cause of the problem.

Many times we see more dry skin in the winter months because of the cold air outside and heated air inside which cause low humidity. Forced-air furnaces make skin even drier. If you have dry skin due to environmental factors or normal aging, you're likely to experience one or more of the following: A feeling of tightness or tautness, especially after showering, bathing or swimming. A loss of plumpness to your skin that can appear shrunken or dehydrated. Skin that feels and looks rough rather than smooth. Itching (pruritus) that sometimes may be intense. Slight to severe flaking or scaling. Fine lines or cracks, severe redness, or deep fissures that may bleed.

Chronic or severe dry skin problems may require a dermatologist's advice. You however can do a lot on your own to improve your skin, including drinking more water, showering less, and above all, moisturizing, moisturizing, moisturizing.  Our skin is an outward reflection of what is going on in our body. Remember the skin is our largest organ and everything that goes on can be absorbed including chlorine from water and chemicals in your skin care products.

Your immune system

Our immune system is so important to us and our good health. Did you know that the human body is one of the most powerful healing tools? When we give our body the correct foods that it needs then the body can do incredible things to help heal. If we supply the body with the nutrition it needs it can then build healthy cells and maintain a healthy immune system. It is so important to have a healthy immune system; this can help us to recover from fighting off major illnesses, infections and disease.

It doesn’t matter what kind of foods we are eating in our modern diets, we may still be missing nutrients that are essential to good health. In our diets today we cannot possibly eat enough of the right food and still get all the nutrients that our bodies need in order to function properly. We don’t live in a world free of synthetic toxins and other pollutants. What we should be eating is lots of raw fresh vegetables daily, and lots of natural foods grown in soil with a high nutrient value, but this isn’t the case. This is certainly evident in the amount of increased sickness, disease, and other health problems we are still seeing today.

There are many things that weaken or lower the immune systems. Here is a list of just a few things we need to think about:

1. The food we eat today is less and less nutritional. The food we eat today is not the same as it once was. Packaged food is processed for shipping and storage and is loaded with many additives which are designed to give them an eternal shelf life, many of the foods are so processed that they contain no essential nutrients to feed the body’s immune system. The farming soil on corporate farms is mostly depleted and void of nutrients. Plants get their vitamins, enzymes, fiber, and essential nutrients from the soil. In order to get the same amount of nutrients from fruits and vegetables today, you would need to eat many more than you would have needed to eat even just a few years ago. Many fruits are usually picked green for shipping so they will last longer on the self. If fruits are not left to ripen on the vine, most of the important nutrients are lost. If we over cook our vegetables we are also robbing them of essential nutrients. Eating vegetables raw is still one of the best foods for the immune system. By cooking them, we loose a lot of the essential and needed nutrients. Last but not least there is our Fast Food Diet. Our modern day lifestyle forces many of us to spend money on fast foods that have little or no nutritional value. As a result your immune system is getting weaker and weaker and disease is imminent.

2. Toxins, I have read where thousand of synthetic man-made chemicals have been introduced into our environment within the last 50 years. Billions of pounds of toxins are released into the environment every year. No matter where you are you cannot escape the toxins that lurk in the air that we breathe, the water that we drink, and the food that we eat. Only a small percentage of these pollutants have been tested for safety in humans. Our bodies need to fight off these toxins everyday, and it is getting harder and harder for our bodies to cope.

3. Stress in our lives is becoming more and more stressful. This includes our hectic jobs, our hectic lifestyle, money, etc. Stress releases bio chemicals that suppress immune function. Our emotional well being can impact our immunity.

4. Prescription medications and pharmaceutical drugs are toxic. This can suppress normal immune function and cause abnormal and sometimes dangerous side effects.

5. You may feel fine and think you are symptom free but this does not necessarily mean that you are healthy. Diseases can be present in your body many years before they are detected. Once the symptoms start to appear it is often then at the point of a serious or critical problem, or sometimes even too late. For instance Cancer can be in the body for many years before any symptoms appear, and the first indication of Heart Disease is usually a fatal heart attack.

Problems could also be showing up in the lymph nodes in our body. It is the job of the lymph nodes to filter out and destroy unwanted debris. There could be many causes for swollen lymph nodes, these may be symptoms of a weaken immune system.

Something to remember about the immune system is that a healthy immune system when it is functioning properly easily recognizes and disposes of problem cells. Only when the immune system fails to recognize or eliminate bad cells can disease, bacteria or viruses become a problem.

We should all try to become more aware of our health. We can’t just sit around and wait for symptoms to appear, or wait to get sick and then go searching for a cure. Sometimes when we wait too long to help ourselves or let things go because of our fears, health problems can sometimes become irreversible. Since my bout with cancer, I pay much more attention to what I do and what I eat. I know I can’t change the world but I can change me and by doing that I can help myself and my family.
